The government of \"comrade\" Madero does not satisfy the peon Tepepa, who continues his battle against the government troops together with a group of faithful fighters, feeling mocked by the ex-revolutionary-come-head of state. Tepepa finds himself several times facing the fearsome Colonel Cascorro and is constantly persecuted by an English doctor, Henry Price, eager to avenge a girl from a wealthy family with whom the doctor was in love and whom Tepepa had raped, driving her to suicide. Cascorro finally manages to wound Tepepa, who had escaped him several times, but in the decisive battle he is killed by the revolutionary. Meanwhile, the doctor, who despite his hatred for Tepepa had remained on the side of the revolutionaries, manages to take revenge on the peon, killing him with a scalpel immediately after extracting the bullet from the wound. Tepepa's death, however, does not mark the end of the revolution, and others will continue the battle in his place. Ennio Morricone composed another remarkable soundtrack for the revolutionary Western genre, creating a solemn theme with a Mexican flavor for Tepepa. The theme returns frequently throughout the film, alternating with a Country-flavored motif for \"Tepepa and Price\" and suspense music (\"Tradimento primo,\" \"Tradimento secondo\"). In November 2003, I was invited to Strasbourg to attend a Western Film Festival. On the plane, I met the director Giulio Petroni, who had been invited among the guests of honor-a very pleasant, and at the same time, very humble person. He spoke to me of Ennio Morricone with great respect and was particularly satisfied with his music for Tepepa. A private viewing of the film on DVD in the company of Petroni was organized in a small room of the hotel, and in the end, the director was deeply moved, and it was a truly emotional moment. Morricone's thriller scores remain some of his most distinctive and original works. As demonstrated in his scores for Dario Argento's efforts in the genre, Morricone's uncanny ability to combine lyricism, unbridled avant-garde experimentation and stylish elegance was his most significant contribution to the category. GIORNATA NERA PER L'ARIETE shows Morricone once again embracing the sophisticated avant-garde sound while beginning his score with a haunting tune performed by Edda Dell'Orso heard over the film's main titles. The lullaby-like theme has a timeless quality, providing a disturbing and disarming melody for the film. As with many of his giallos, Ennio Morricone's score for GIORNATA NERA PER L'ARIETE was never released on an album (only the main theme was included in the Morricone compilation album COLORI in 1971). In 1996, under the composer's supervision, the Point label released the first official album of the score. In 2001, Dagored expanded the program to 10 minutes, and it was expanded again for release in Japan in 2007 on the Verita Note label. But despite these expansions, there was still some music recorded by Morricone that remained unreleased. For this new Quartet edition, the score has been fully restored, remixed and edited by Daniel Winkler from the original tapes of the recording session, presenting the complete score as Morricone conceived it on disc 1. Disc 2 contains the original remastered album prepared by Morricone in 1996, as well as several alternates. The story of the film takes place in Venice during the fascist era on the eve of the declaration of the Second World War. It is the story of an elderly English professor, director of the Art Biennale, and his young wife Teresa. In 1983, the Triple Time Music label issued a 33rpm album with ten selections assembled by the composer himself. The same material was reissued on a French 33rpm album and on a German 33rpm album. For this world premiere CD reissue, Beat Records have remastered the first-generation stereo master tapes vaulted in Cabum archives and used for the 1983 Italian vinyl. For Ennio Morricone fans around the world, it'll surely be a welcome addition, especially considering that La Chiave is one of the very few scores by Ennio Morricone that was not yet available in CD format. The album opens with a grotesque slow waltz reprising Strauss's \"The Blue Danube Waltz\", given a very personal arrangement in \"Da Vienna A Vienna (1a versione)\" and reprised in \"Da Vienna A Vienna (2a versione)\", and \"Quattro Frammenti Per Orchestra Da Camera\". For \"Funebre E Pomposo\",' the composer has written a very dramatic orchestral piece for a funeral. The classic side of Ennio Morricone is present in \"Due Variazioni Da Un Tema Sereno\", where the Baroque approach represents Venice. A happy theme with a prominent flute and waltz tempo describes the quieter moments of the plot in \"Citazione Da Un Vecchio Valzer\", and there's a can-can with funny tonalities typical of the Petri and Tornatore movies in \"Mini Can Can Grottesco\". A string quartet slowly describes the sensuality of the protagonist in \"Tre Frammenti Per Quattro D'archi\", and a psychological feeling of sadness and anxiety is evoked by the seemingly quiet piece \"Malessere\".
